"How much to fix my aircon?" has no single answer, because the repair depends entirely on what's wrong. What you can control is getting the right diagnosis before paying for a fix.
Start with the diagnosis
Many companies charge for the first visit, where a technician checks the unit and finds the fault. Ask what this costs and whether it is credited if you go ahead with the repair. A good diagnosis saves money: plenty of "not cold" calls turn out to be a dirty coil rather than a broken part.
Common faults, roughly from simple to serious
- Water leaking indoors: usually a blocked drain line or dirty unit. Often fixed with a service. See our water leaking guide.

- Weak cooling: dirty filters or coil, low refrigerant, or a failing part.
- Outdoor unit not starting: often an electrical part such as a capacitor or contactor.
- Noise or rattling: loose panels, a worn fan motor or a damaged blower.
- Compressor failure: the most expensive fault. On older systems, replacing the unit may make more sense.

Repair or replace?
Think about replacement if the system is old, the repair involves the compressor or a major part, or it has needed several repairs recently. Ask the technician for both options in writing, and remember that a new system may also use less electricity.

- Ask to see the fault, such as the pressure reading, the burnt part or the blocked drain.
- Get the repair price in writing before work starts.
- Ask about warranty on parts and labour.
- Be wary of a cheap service visit that turns into an expensive repair on the spot. You can ask for time to get a second quote.
